The New Lexicon offers improvisers and improvisation theorists a framework in which to deepen the artistic and intellectual dimensions of practice. Over several months, participants can move beyond the exchange of a workshop or conference and develop questions through presentation, response, revision, experimentation, and articulation.
The programme enables participants to clarify the concepts and philosophical commitments implicit in improvisational decisions; advance performances, texts, pedagogies, technologies, and artistic-research projects through substantive feedback; develop precise languages for presenting and contextualizing work; test artistic and theoretical propositions within an international research community; and encounter methodologies, aesthetic positions, and conceptual traditions beyond one’s usual field of reference.
Participants will be able to situate their practices within wider historical, philosophical, technological, institutional, cultural, and political debates. This contextualization is not intended to displace the specificity of improvisational work. It enables participants to understand more clearly how their practices participate in, resist, or transform the conditions around them.
The residency may generate artistic directions, research questions, presentation formats, pedagogical approaches, and intellectual relationships. It creates a basis for future collaborations, publications, performances, lectures, and research projects beyond the programme’s duration. Its value lies not in delivering a single model of success, but in equipping participants to formulate stronger questions, make more deliberate and responsible decisions, and communicate the significance of their practices with greater precision.
