TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF IMPROVISATION
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify an authoritative philosophy of improvisation nor to determine what such a philosophy must be. The field must remain responsive to practices differing in medium, history, method, aesthetic orientation, culture, and social position. Its concepts must be precise without pretending to universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing the singularity of emergent action and the structures within which action becomes possible. These differences remain philosophically consequential.
The programme aims to establish conditions for multiple philosophies of improvisation to emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. They may disagree about freedom, the location of agency, the status of knowledge, the relation between preparation and spontaneity, the criteria of value, or the responsibilities of participation. Their value lies not in convergence but in clarifying what is at stake and renewing the languages through which improvisation understands itself.
A new lexicon makes new distinctions possible while increasing accountability for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear, what they prevent us from hearing, whose actions they recognize, and how improvisational practice might transform the terms of its own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites improvisers and theorists to undertake it collectively.
